When we first decided to write this article, we were a little uncertain of how to title it.  Then after
a bit of debate we decided to call it....

"The Great Granite City Shopping Cart Round Up or What's Up With This?"
After cocooning in the air conditioning for a week or so, my sister and I decided to venture out for a Church's
Chicken fix.  The weather was finally bearable and we looked forward to getting some fresh air.  While sipping on
our Hit N Run Humdingers and enjoying the break in the weather, we were stopped at a red light.  In
mid-conversation, my sister and I stop talking, dumb founded at what we were seeing.  We asked each other,
"What's up with this?"

Right there, in front of numerous Granite City businesses, at one of this city's prominent intersections, is this
walloping heap of garbage, strewn among bus stop benches and a crop of shopping carts.

Take a look...I mean..honestly....
can you believe this mess?

Now, I don't know how the rest of you feel, but
we were
ticked and embarrassed.
Embarrassed for our city and ticked that
someone has such disrespect for our town.  We
could only speculate as to what someone
unfamiliar with Granite City might think if they
were to drive down Nameoki Road.
It seemed as though the more we drove around, the
more shopping carts we would find.  There were a few
out in front of the Nameoki Commons area, hanging out
in front of Arby's, then several more at the next bus
stop in front of Hollywood Video.

The most common were from K-Mart, Shop N Save, and
Big Lots.  Now, we understand these businesses can not
hire a full time buggy retriever, but there has to be
something that can be done.

Some of the carts were empty, and some were crammed
full of garbage and trash. Some were standing, some
thrown to the ground, but they were all still there the
next day.

We considered picking up the trash, at the very least,
but once we got a good gander at it we changed our
minds.  We didn't have disposal gloves, and this stuff
was down right gnarly.

Now we aren't here just to gripe, but to try to foster
some creativity in finding a solution to this shopping cart
issue.  Something we considered was similar to the old
soda bottle deposit charge.  If you return your cart you
get your deposit back, similar to Aldi's .  If you don't,
you don't.  BUT...whoever rounds up these carts and
returns them to their rightful owner, is the recipient of
the deposit.  Hey....it's a thought.  Or how about a "buggy
bounty"?  Let the businesses reward the captor.

We, here at granitecitygossip.com want to say "Shame
on you!"....We just don't know who to say it to!
