| Happy May Granite City! Did you know that the month of May was named for the Greek goddess Maia? We bet you didn't know no other month begins on the same day of the week as May! And May's birthstone is the emerald! This month is a busy one starting with May Day on the first, which also is the day we all got to watch the Kentucky Derby! The second jewel in the Triple Crown of horse racing is The Preakness which follows two weeks later. And of course May is the month for Mother's Day, Memorial Day and the first full month of Cardinal Baseball! Check below for all of the activities that are going on in our fine home town... The Granite City Community Band will present its final concert of the 2009-10 season on Friday, May 7th at 7:00 P.M. at the Granite City Township Hall located at 2048 Delmar Avenue The band is under the direction of Maurice Mestemacher and the program includes a medley from “My Fair Lady”, “Disney at the Movies” which includes the favorites “A Whole New World”, “Under the Sea”, “Zip-a-dee-doo-Dah” and many more. The band will play excerpts from “The Marriage of Figaro” by Mozart and the music of Henry Mancini including “Moon River”.
